Program Description:
Theory meets hands-on practice in this comprehensive introductory course. Through a combination of practical instruction in the welding booth, simulated testing, & online learning guided by expert instructors, students will gain a holistic understanding of the art & science of welding.
Safety takes precedence from the outset, with an in-depth exploration of safety precautions specific to arc welding. Participants will grasp the importance of maintaining safety protocols throughout the welding process, ensuring a secure working environment for themselves & their peers.
The course covers essential topics related to shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), including equipment requirements, arc control techniques, visual inspection, & quality control. Students will master the art of striking & controlling the arc, learning to manipulate welding distortion & adhere to guidelines for electrode selection to achieve optimal weld size & profile.
Moreover, participants will explore advanced techniques such as carbon arc cutting & gouging, as well as hard-surfacing & repair of cast iron. The curriculum culminates in the examination of various welding positions required for qualification tests on 3/8” mild steel, providing students with a comprehensive skill set essential for success in the welding profession.
In NIT’s weld shop, high school & homeschool students will be introduced to basic welding principles, tools, gases & filler metals. Theory-based learning through instructor-led online lectures is reinforced by hands-on time in the shop. Outfitted with welding booths, simulators, personal protective equipment & safety instruction, students have the chance to build their skillset, one process at a time.
