High School: Auto Mechanic - Travel Readiness Intensive

Course Overview

Tuition Cost: $500

Summer in Alaska almost beckons us to hit the open road, driving off into the not-quite-sunset. It’s a freeing feeling, but one that can quickly turn into feeling trapped if our vehicles break down along the roadside. This intensive focuses on the preparations drivers should make for longer trips & the repairs & actions they should take if they encounter some of the most common problems along the way.

Students will develop the skills needed to conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection of their vehicles, ensuring safety and reliability on the road. Through hands-on learning, they will gain practical experience with essential automotive systems, identifying common issues and their solutions. This course also explores the science behind key vehicle functions, helping students understand how and why these systems work. Collaborative activities will reinforce teamwork and shared problem-solving, preparing students for a safer, more confident season on the road. Issues addressed will include:

  • Wheels & tires
  • Fluids checks
  • Brakes
  • Electronics
  • Field repairs
  • Roadside assistance procedures
  • Emergency kits
