Tuesday – Friday 1 PM to 5 PM daily
Course Overview
Students will learn the basics of the construction trade, with an emphasis on carpentry. Students will drive each step of the building process, from the planning stages to the goal of completing a viable structure (smokehouse, shed, outhouse, etc.). They will be introduced to the basics of tool use, safety, planning & materials before diving into and implementing the stages of construction. Learning will come to life when students work together in the NIT shop to construct a building of their own, getting a chance to take part in every step of a build.
Learning Outcomes
Students will expand their knowledge of the power tools, design strategies & techniques they’ve learned already. They will demonstrate proficiency in reading plans, using tools & executing a plan. They will improve all carpentry skills through purposeful repetition and practical application, with attention to the math employed in pursuit of the build & the cultural relevance of the project at hand. Students will work on:
- Reading design plans/blueprints
- Considering context in building
- Framing
- Foundations
- Roofing
- Finish work
Resources
NIT will provide in-shop PPE. Work boots recommended.
Determination of Credit
Each intensive will include two primary components:
- 32 hours of in-person instruction at the NIT shop
- Completion of the Student Workbook
Student workbooks are developed using NIT’s curriculum and will include reading assignments, vocabulary and key concept reviews, independent exercises, embedded video content with required responses, knowledge checks, safety highlights, and a final independent written project
