High School: Carpentry Intensive: Farming 7/13 – 7/24

Schedule

Monday – Thursday 1 PM to 5 PM daily

Course Overview

Working with local farmers to create outbuildings to be used in service of agricultural production, students get a chance to look at how to apply their carpentry skills to a specific context. It’s one thing to learn the basics; it’s another to see those practices come to life in a practicable way. Situating our work in the context of our community provides a glimpse at how the work that we do can have a direct benefit not just to a client, but to everyone effected by that client. We will focus on workable & achievable building goals depending on the farm’s needs, like cold storage, crates for market, farmstands, raised beds, etc.

Learning Outcomes

Students will expand their knowledge of the power tools, design strategies & techniques they’ve learned already. They will demonstrate proficiency in reading plans, using tools & executing a plan. They will improve all carpentry skills through purposeful repetition and practical application, with attention to the math employed in pursuit of the build & the cultural relevance of the project at hand. Students will work on:

  • Reading design plans/blueprints
  • Considering context in building
  • Framing
  • Foundations
  • Roofing
  • Finish work

Resources

NIT will provide in-shop PPE. Work boots recommended.

Determination of Credit

Each intensive will include two primary components:

  • 32 hours of in-person instruction at the NIT shop
  • Completion of the Student Workbook

Student workbooks are developed using NIT’s curriculum and will include reading assignments, vocabulary and key concept reviews, independent exercises, embedded video content with required responses, knowledge checks, safety highlights, and a final independent written project
